Forwarding UNIX E-mail FAQ

Note: Because UNIX is a case sensitive language, when commands are given in these FAQs, please type them as is. For example, the word 'pine' would be typed all lower case.

Also, to show that something is a command, it will be surrounded by quotes, i.e. 'pine' but when you type the command, do not type the quotes, only what is inside of them.

When you change E-mail addresses, you may wish to have your email forwarded to your new address until your old address is finally closed.

With a UNIX shell account you can easily do this with a file called .forward (yes, that's a dot before the word forward).

To create this file, do the following (note, you may wish to read the FAQ on pico):

At the main UNIX prompt, type 'pico .forward' (remember, without the quotes) and hit enter.

Type in your new E-mail address.

Hold down the control key and hit 'x'

You will be asked: Save modified buffer (ANSWERING "No" WILL DESTROY CHANGES) ?

Hit 'y'

It will say: File Name to write : .forward

Hit enter

That's all there is to it!
